While it’s quite the drive out to this county park, it’s well worth it to experience the incredible and famous rock formations of Vasquez Rocks.

Vasquez Rocks is a fairly small park with easy trails to walk along and giant rocks that you can climb. The views from all around on a clear day are stunning.

The downside is there’s only a limited time of year to really explore this park because there is zero shade. I’m sure in the summer it would not be tolerable at all. We like to visit the park in the winter months on cool days.

The actual trails are wide and easy to walk on. However, if you do venture onto the rocks themselves, make sure your dog is comfortable with climbing and jumping. Also be careful as most of the rock surfaces are fairly smooth. Luckily for Baxter, he’s very low to the ground so he had no trouble scrambling many rocks and boulders with us. We didn’t take him where he didn’t want to go. He seems to know his limits as well as we do.

You must bring in your own water as there is no water available on site. Dogs are welcome on leashes, though on our trips we saw many dogs off leash, which can be a big annoyance. All in all, if you haven’t been to Vasquez Rocks, it’s definitely worth the drive to at least see why so many TV shows and movies have filmed in the area. The rock formations are other worldly and it’s a great little park to take beginning short hikes.
